Today I felt like being bad for many weeks,

wanted my children to watch me, these children,

destined to be good, wanted to sweep that goodness

out of them, feeling the old tracks they’re on are

too set, too shiny for them to ever step off.

Today I thought of childhood girlfriends, Lori, Kathy, Kristine,

all of us brought up on Little Women, how all of us would,

after the Beatles records were put away at night,

talk about goodness, and sometimes beauty and goodness,

and which we would choose if we could only have one.
